Calves and Drafts
Proper ventilation and air exchange can help decrease heat, moisture, dust, and airborne pathogens in the air. Ventilating a calf barn is actually much different than ventilating a cow barn though. Calves do not tolerate drafts well and can become sick and experience respiratory issues when cold drafts hit them. So, when choosing a ventilation system, you must ensure that it will not cause harmful drafts to reach your calves.
Ideal Air Exchange Rates
The air exchange rate is defined as the length of time it takes for the air in a barn to turn over one complete time. Much like ventilation systems as a whole, the air exchange rate changes seasonally. In the winter months, an ideal air exchange rate might be 4-5 times per hour. In the spring and fall, it is often 10-20 times per hour. In the summer, exchange rates can be in the 40s.
