Calf Barn Ventilation

In these final days of summer, the last thing we want to think about is winter. But in no time, those cool summer breezes will become a frosty winter chill. Creating a comfortable, cool, and draft-free calf barn is important year-round, but can be especially challenging to maintain during seasonal changes without the proper systems in place. Without proper and consistent ventilation, you could be running into sick calves and hindered profits. Read on for our overview of calf barn ventilation best practices.

 Calves and Drafts

Proper ventilation and air exchange can help decrease heat, moisture, dust, and airborne pathogens in the air. Ventilating a calf barn is actually much different than ventilating a cow barn though. Calves do not tolerate drafts well and can become sick and experience respiratory issues when cold drafts hit them. So, when choosing a ventilation system, you must ensure that it will not cause harmful drafts to reach your calves.

 Ideal Air Exchange Rates

The air exchange rate is defined as the length of time it takes for the air in a barn to turn over one complete time. Much like ventilation systems as a whole, the air exchange rate changes seasonally. In the winter months, an ideal air exchange rate might be 4-5 times per hour. In the spring and fall, it is often 10-20 times per hour. In the summer, exchange rates can be in the 40s.

 Choosing the Right Ventilation System

Ventilation systems are not one size fits all. When it comes to a ventilation system for a calf barn, tube ventilation could be the right choice. Tube ventilation is a good way to gently introduce fresh air into your calf barn, while not allowing harmful drafts to reach your calves. By creating an environment infused with fresh air and less airborne bacterial counts, calf health will improve. Check out our customized tube ventilation system here.
