FAQs:
J&D tested multiple motors to be considered for the Mega Direct Drive Fan, and we chose the one that was the toughest, and it just happened to be a permanent magnet motor. It has very good performance and efficiency, especially in this application. This motor was vigorously tested in this fan to the point we were trying to make it fail. No matter what we did, we couldn't get the motor windings hot. Winding temperature is the biggest factor in predicting motor lifespan. No matter what we did, we couldn't get the windings to heat up even close to what was allowed.
Switch reluctance motors are good motors, however, we find them to be too loud for our application. The reason they are loud is switch reluctance motors rotate in consecutive 'steps'. The steps are fast so the shaft rotates, but this makes them louder. You can make switch reluctance motors quieter with algorithm changes that smooths the steps, but making that change also cuts the performance and efficiency, and they're still louder than a permanent magnet or induction motor.
